Parmjeet Singh Gazi
Editor of Sikh Siyasat News and a speaker who argues, using Gregory Stanton's stages of genocide, that November 1984 was a genocide and that denying it continues the crime.
Parmjeet Singh Gazi is the editor of Sikh Siyasat News, a Sikh news site, and a regular speaker at seminars, shaheedi samagams and morchas. He is best known for arguing that the massacres of Sikhs in November 1984 were a genocide, using Gregory Stanton's stages of genocide. He is a living public figure. What follows comes from Sikh Siyasat News, which publishes his talks, and his arguments are attributed to him as arguments.
Sikh Siyasat News reports that he co-edited the book Sikh Nasalkushi 1984, also titled Sikh Genocide 1984: Eye-witness Accounts, Analysis and Documents, and wrote a booklet in Punjabi and English applying Stanton's stages to the events of 1984.
Key moments
- November 2016: at a seminar held by students of Punjabi University, Patiala, he presented a paper, "Genocide and the Sikh Genocide 1984". He traced the word to Raphael Lemkin, cited Stanton's eight stages to argue that the November 1984 massacres were a genocide, and called them the third major Ghallughara in Sikh history.
- 15 November 2018: at a seminar on genocide in the modern era at Panjab University, Chandigarh, with Dr Garga Chatterjee and Bhai Ajmer Singh, he spoke on the stages of genocide and 1984. He argued that denial is an unending stage of genocide, and that international law criminalises only physical genocide although genocide also works through political, social, economic, cultural, moral and biological means.
- 8 November 2021: speaking to Guru Nanak Dev University students at a remembrance event, he argued that India has no law defining genocide or crimes against humanity, so neither is investigated, tried or punished, which he called impunity built into the legal system.
- 10 December 2024: with other Sikh personalities he met Jagjit Singh Dallewal at the Khanauri morcha, and spoke on why the success of the 2024 to 2025 farmers' protest mattered.
- 23 October 2025: he spoke virtually on a panel on the 1984 Sikh Genocide at the 17th Biennial Meeting of the International Association of Genocide Scholars in Johannesburg. Relying on Stanton, he argued that denial is the last and never-ending stage of genocide, and "an active continuation of genocide".
- 30 May 2026: at a memorial samagam at Dehlon, near Ludhiana, organised by Jatha Sikh Youth Power of Punjab, he said the regional and international environment had become more complex and uncertain, and urged Sikhs to build their own mechanisms of collective decision-making and structures for united leadership.
Known for: bringing the stages-of-genocide framework into Sikh seminars on 1984, and the argument that denial of 1984, including India's lack of a law on genocide, continues the genocide.
