Jagdish Tytler

Congress leader; former Union minister; accused in the Gurdwara Pul Bangash killings of 1 November 1984

Congress leader and former Union minister accused of inciting the mob that killed three Sikhs at Gurdwara Pul Bangash on 1 November 1984. He denies it; murder charges were framed in 2024.

Jagdish Tytler is a Congress leader and former Union minister from Delhi. He is an accused in the killing of three Sikhs and the burning of Gurdwara Pul Bangash in north Delhi on 1 November 1984, during the pogrom that followed Indira Gandhi's assassination. He denies the charge and no court has convicted him. He is a living person, so everything below is attributed to the record.

The case. The three men killed were Thakur Singh, Badal Singh and Gurcharan Singh. The CBI alleges that Tytler came out of a white car in front of the gurdwara and “incited, instigated and provoked” the mob, and it bases this on a witness statement. The complaint that kept the case alive came from Lakhwinder Kaur, the widow of Badal Singh. In 2024 Tytler told the Delhi High Court he was the victim of a “witch-hunt” over an offence more than four decades old. His lawyer argued that he was not at the spot; the CBI and the victims answered that the High Court had already rejected that alibi plea.

Key moments

Context. Another Congress leader named by the Nanavati Commission, Sajjan Kumar, was convicted by the Delhi High Court on 17 December 2018 and sentenced to life for the killing of five Sikhs. Tytler's case shows how slow 1984 justice has been: 19 years separate the Nanavati finding in 2005 from the framing of charges in 2024.
