Sonia Gandhi

Congress leader; Congress president 1998 to 2017 · 1946

Italian-born Congress leader, party president 1998 to 2017. Sikhs for Justice sued her in a US court over 1984; dismissed in 2014, upheld on appeal in 2015. Rajya Sabha member since 2024.

Sonia Gandhi is the Italian-born leader who headed the Indian National Congress for nineteen years. She is the daughter-in-law of Indira Gandhi. For the Panth she matters because she led the Congress, the party Sikh leaders keep asking to answer for 1984, and because of the US lawsuit that Sikhs for Justice brought against her. She is a living public figure; the facts below are sourced and the judgments are attributed.

Key moments

The courts dismissed the case on legal grounds (standing, the time limit, jurisdiction and failure to state a claim) and no trial on the allegations was held. Sikh leaders have separately asked for an apology from her family and party, as the 2005 reactions show.
