Khadoor Sahib

ਖਡੂਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ

Village near Tarn Taran that was the second Guru's seat from 1539 to 1552, and a Lok Sabha seat that in 2024 elected Amritpal Singh while he was held in Assam.

Khadur, which the Lok Sabha seat spells Khadoor, is an old village about 19 km east of Tarn Taran in Punjab. The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism says it is sacred to the first three Gurus. Bhai Lahina, who became Guru Angad, married here in 1519. After Guru Nanak named him his successor in 1539 he came back to Khadur, which became the centre of the Sikh faith until his death in 1552. Amar Das served him here and was in turn anointed Guru.

The Encyclopaedia says Guru Angad taught children Gurmukhi letters here and gave instruction in wrestling at Mall Akhara. The shrines include Tapiana Sahib, Mai Bharai, Mall Akhara and Darbar Sahib Angitha Sahib, where the Guru was cremated; the SGPC manages them through a local committee.

Key moments

  • 1539 to 1552: Khadur is Guru Angad’s seat.
  • 4 June 2024: the Khadoor Sahib seat elected Amritpal Singh, head of Waris Punjab De, as an Independent while he was held in Dibrugarh jail in Assam under the National Security Act. He beat Congress’s Kulbir Singh Zira by 1,97,120 votes (The Tribune, PTI).
  • 5 July 2024: he was released for up to four days, escorted and confined to New Delhi, to take his oath in the Lok Sabha (Sikh Siyasat News).
  • 11 and 12 March 2025: the Lok Sabha granted him 54 days of leave of absence, and the Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected his plea to attend Parliament. He had written to the Speaker that 60 days of absence could lead to his seat being declared vacant (ThePrint).
  • April 2026: with his NSA detention due to end on 22 April, Punjab asked the High Court to let it keep him in Dibrugarh, and told the court he would be formally arrested on 23 April in the Ajnala police station case (ThePrint).

What it means today. The seat carries the name of the second Guru’s town. Since 2024 it has also carried the question of a jailed Member of Parliament whose plea to attend the House the High Court rejected in March 2025.
