Punjab Vidhan Sabha election 2027
The election for all 117 seats, expected in February 2027, is the first statewide test of the AAP government, with the opposition and the Panthic vote split.
Who: Punjab's voters, who will fill all 117 seats of the Vidhan Sabha, and the parties seeking their votes: the Aam Aadmi Party government of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, which won 92 seats in 2022; the Congress; the Shiromani Akali Dal under Sukhbir Singh Badal; the BJP, which says it will contest all 117 seats alone; and Waris Punjab De, an unregistered party whose working president is Tarsem Singh, father of the detained Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh.
What: This election has not yet been held. It is expected in February 2027. The run-up so far: a Special Intensive Revision of the rolls left a final electoral roll of 2,01,00,727 voters, about 13.6 lakh fewer than before the revision. Punjab's civic polls on 26 May 2026, counted on 29 May, gave AAP 958 of 1,977 wards, the Congress 397, independents 251, the Akali Dal 192 and the BJP 172. On 11 June Sukhbir Badal would not answer questions about a BJP alliance, while the BJP repeated that it would go alone. The Congress state chief, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, said AAP would not win even ten seats.
On the Panthic side, Waris Punjab De and the Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) formed a Panthic Unity Coordination Committee on 18 April 2026, with the Dakha MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali as convener. By 9 June Ayali had joined Waris Punjab De at Chandigarh, with Tarsem Singh and Mandeep Singh Sidhu present. He ruled out any BJP alliance and made Amritpal Singh's release a priority, while Tarsem Singh said efforts to unite with other Panthic leaders and the Akali Dal (Sanyukt) had not succeeded. On 15 June Sri Akal Takht Sahib declared Chief Minister Mann guru dokhi.
Where: Punjab's 117 assembly constituencies.
Why it mattered: It will be the first statewide verdict on the Mann government since its 2022 mandate, in which the Akali Dal won three seats and the BJP two. ThePrint's analyst warns that the civic results do not guarantee a 2027 win. The result will also show whether a Panthic vote divided among several banners can matter. No result is known, and this account should be rewritten once the vote is held.
