Alwinderpal Singh Pakhoke
ਅਲਵਿੰਦਰਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਪੱਖੋਕੇ
Akali leader who, as senior vice-president of the SGPC, acted as its president in July 2003 and again from April to September 2004, after the death of Gurcharan Singh Tohra.
Alwinderpal Singh Pakhoke is a Shiromani Akali Dal leader who rose to be senior vice-president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Twice he ran the SGPC as its acting or officiating president, in the gaps between elected presidents.
The Tribune reported in April 2004 that he first became an SGPC member in 1996 and became senior vice-president after the death of Balbir Singh Pannu. In November 2003 he was elected senior vice-president, with Kewal Singh Badal as junior vice-president, by voice vote.
- 20 July 2003: the SGPC's list ends the term of Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar on this day. The Tribune says Pakhoke officiated as president when Badungar resigned, to make way for Gurcharan Singh Tohra.
- 24 July 2003: as the SGPC's acting president, he presided over the executive committee meeting at Fatehgarh Sahib at which Tohra was elected to the executive, on his proposal, the Tribune reported.
- 27 July 2003: at an emergency executive committee meeting at Amritsar, he proposed Tohra's name for the presidency of the SGPC, and Tohra was elected.
- 1 April 2004: Tohra died, in the early hours of the day, at Escorts Hospital in New Delhi. The SGPC's list gives Pakhoke's term as 1 April to 23 September 2004; the Tribune says he took over as officiating president on 3 April.
- 23 September 2004: Bibi Jagir Kaur took over as SGPC president. The Tribune that day called Pakhoke the outgoing working president.
In December 2022 The Tribune described him as having served as senior vice-president of the Shiromani Akali Dal and acting head of the SGPC. He told the paper he had been a loyal soldier of the SAD for 45 years.
He is remembered as the office-bearer who kept the SGPC running at the two moments when its president's chair fell empty.
