Dr Rajinder Kaur

ਡਾ. ਰਾਜਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ

Editor of the monthly Sant Sipahi (1986); daughter of Master Tara Singh

Daughter of Master Tara Singh, who spoke for Sikh nationhood at the Golden Temple in April 1981 and was editor in 1986 of the monthly Sant Sipahi, founded by her father.

Dr Rajinder Kaur is the daughter of Master Tara Singh, the Akali leader. She appears in Gurmit Singh's History of Sikh Struggles as a speaker for the claim that the Sikhs are a nation in 1981 and as editor of the monthly Sant Sipahi in 1986. The sources opened for this page say nothing about her education, her career or her later life, so none of that is stated here.

In his first chapter Gurmit Singh writes that the slogan that the Sikhs are a nation soon won wide support among Sikhs. He says Rajinder Kaur, daughter of Master Tara Singh, and Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale made fiery speeches in support of the claim at the Golden Temple in April 1981, and that Sant Harchand Singh Longowal also supported it. A Home Ministry note on Khalistan that he reprints in Appendix 60 says the same of her and Bhindranwale, and records an SGPC resolution of 29 March declaring that the Sikhs are a nation apart from other Indians.

Key moments

  • April 1981: speaks at the Golden Temple in support of the claim that the Sikhs are a nation (Gurmit Singh, vol. I, p. 57 and p. 542).
  • June 1986: a footnote in Gurmit Singh's Appendix 59 describes Sant Sipahi as a Punjabi monthly founded by Master Tara Singh, published from Amritsar and now edited by his daughter, Dr Rajinder Kaur, and says the text printed in that appendix was taken from its June 1986 issue.
