Professor Manjit Singh
ਪ੍ਰੋਫ਼ੈਸਰ ਮਨਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ
Jathedar of Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib in February 1999, named by The Tribune in the dispute over the Akal Takht; lists also name a Manjit Singh as acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht in the 1990s.
Professor Manjit Singh was the Jathedar of Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib in February 1999, when The Tribune named him among the Takht Jathedars drawn into the dispute over the leadership of the Akal Takht. The paper calls him "Prof Manjit Singh" in one report and "Bhai Manjit Singh" in another.
Key moments
- 7 February 1999: The Tribune reported that Birdevinder Singh, a general secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, asked Parkash Singh Badal, Gurcharan Singh Tohra and the Jathedars of the Akal Takht (Bhai Ranjit Singh), Takht Damdama Sahib (Giani Kewal Singh) and Kesgarh Sahib (Prof Manjit Singh) to resign to maintain peace and communal harmony in the state.
- 13 February 1999: Gobind Thukral wrote in The Tribune that the three Jathedars of Keshgarh Sahib, Nanded Sahib and Damdama Sahib were on one side in the dispute with the Akal Takht Jathedar.
- 14 February 1999: The Tribune reported a resolution by heads of gurdwaras and Sikh bodies at Bathinda that urged Ranjit Singh, whom it calls the suspended Akal Takht Jathedar, to summon Parkash Singh Badal and others, among them Bhai Manjit Singh, Jathedar of Takht Kesgarh Sahib, and ten SGPC executive members "who had sided with Mr Badal".
Two lists name a Manjit Singh as an acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht. Wikipedia's table of Jathedars gives a Manjit Singh, born in 1952, as acting Jathedar from 1994 to 1997, citing a 1995 SGPC book that could not be opened. SikhNet's history of the Jathedars lists an acting Jathedar Manjit Singh among those appointed and removed after 1984, with no dates. Neither says he held Kesgarh Sahib, and the Tribune reports do not say he held the Akal Takht, so those lines are given here as the lists' claims only. The sources opened give nothing else about his life.
