Barjinder Singh Makhan Brar
Akali leader from Moga, son of Jathedar Tota Singh and Akali in charge of Dharamkot, who left the Punar Surjit faction and rejoined Sukhbir Badal's Akali Dal in April 2026.
Barjinder Singh Makhan Brar is an Akali Dal leader from Moga district. He is the son of the late Jathedar Tota Singh, a long-serving Akali minister and member of the SGPC who died on 21 May 2022. Makhan Brar was chairman of the Punjab Health Systems Corporation during the SAD-BJP government and president of the Moga Municipal Council, and after his father's death he became the party's in-charge for the Dharamkot constituency, according to The Tribune.
He contested Moga on a SAD ticket in 2017 and 2022 and finished third both times, with 36,587 votes (25.29 per cent) in 2017 and 28,333 votes (19.64 per cent) in 2022, according to Wikipedia's constituency page.
Between the Akali factions in 2026
- He left the Shiromani Akali Dal and joined the breakaway SAD (Punar Surjit).
- On the Saturday before 7 April 2026 he announced on Facebook that he was resigning from that party's primary membership and all its posts. He accused its president Giani Harpreet Singh and Dakha MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali of misleading the Sikh community by joining hands with agencies. That is his allegation; the report gives no detail.
- On 7 April 2026 he was formally taken back into the Akali Dal at Sukhbir Singh Badal's residence in Badal village, Muktsar district, with SAD leaders from Moga. SAD leaders said his return would greatly help the party in Moga district.
Why it is recorded: The Tribune treats his return as a gain for the Akali Dal in Moga district, and the next Punjab Assembly election is due in early 2027.
