Member of the twelve-man Akali Dal sub-committee that drafted the Anandpur Sahib policy programme (1972 to 1973); Major General

Major General named by the Encyclopaedia of Sikhism as one of the twelve members of the Akali Dal sub-committee of December 1972 that drafted the policy programme behind the Anandpur Sahib Resolution.

Major General Gurbakhsh Singh of Badhani (spelt Badhani on this page) was named by the Encyclopaedia of Sikhism as one of the twelve members of the Akali Dal sub-committee that drafted the policy programme later known as the Anandpur Sahib Resolution. The Encyclopaedia gives him the rank of Major General and names him only in that list.

Key moments

  • 11 December 1972: the Shiromani Akali Dal appointed a sub-committee to reflect on the situation and to restate the party's programme and policies. The Encyclopaedia names the twelve members as Surjit Singh Barnala, Gurcharan Singh Tohra, Jiwan Singh Umranangal, Gurmeet Singh, Dr Bhagat Singh, Balwant Singh, Gian Singh Rarewala, Amar Singh Ambalvi, Prem Singh Lalpura, Jaswinder Singh Brar, Bhag Singh and Major General Gurbakhsh Singh of Badhani.
  • 1973: the sub-committee met first at Amritsar and then at Chandigarh, and finished its work in ten meetings.
  • 16 and 17 October 1973: the Working Committee of the Akali Dal adopted the resolution unanimously at Anandpur Sahib.
  • 28 and 29 October 1978: the resolution was endorsed through a series of resolutions at the 18th All-India Akali Conference in Ludhiana.

The sources opened say nothing else about his life, his army career, or his later work, so nothing more is stated here. He is remembered only as the Major General on the committee that drafted the Akali Dal's policy programme of the 1970s.
