Sardar Karam Singh Zakhmi
ਸਰਦਾਰ ਕਰਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮੀ
Editor-in-charge of the daily Akali in 1955 who compiled the date-by-date history of the Punjabi Suba morcha, Punjabi Sube De Morche Di Twarikh; Harjinder Singh Dilgeer revised it for the SGPC.
Sardar Karam Singh Zakhmi was the editor-in-charge of the daily Akali (printed in his foreword as "Ro: Akali") in 1955, and the man who compiled a date-by-date history of that year's Punjabi Suba morcha. The book is Punjabi Sube De Morche Di Twarikh, the History of the Punjabi Suba Agitation, and its title page names him as editor.
Key moments
- 24 August 1955: he dated his foreword at Amritsar. He says the book gives the causes of the morcha and the big events of its 64 days, with the photographs of events and people that he could get, and that a full roll of the volunteers would need many times its pages.
- In the same foreword he writes that Master Tara Singh, the general of the morcha, had only just been arrested and seated in the police jeep when the whole Sikh community began marching to jail, and that more than 12,000 men and women were arrested in the 64 days.
- He asks readers to point out any mistakes so that they can be corrected in a new edition.
- 6 September 1998: Harjinder Singh Dilgeer dated his introduction to the revised and enlarged edition published by the SGPC's Sikh Ithas Research Board, and says Zakhmi had prepared the date-wise history of the morcha and that the new book presents it with corrections.
The pages opened give his name and his post but not his dates of birth and death or his other work, so nothing more is stated here. He is remembered for the history of the 1955 morcha that still carries his name.
