Sardar Kabal Singh

ਸਰਦਾਰ ਕਬਲ ਸਿੰਘ

President of the SGPC, 23 March to 30 November 1986

SGPC president from 23 March to 30 November 1986, between Gurcharan Singh Tohra's terms; Khushwant Singh calls him Chief Minister Barnala's nominee, beaten by Tohra.

Sardar Kabal Singh was president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) from 23 March to 30 November 1986, according to the SGPC's own list of presidents. Khushwant Singh's A History of the Sikhs spells his name Kabul Singh and calls him the nominee of Chief Minister Surjit Singh Barnala in the SGPC elections.

Key moments

  • 23 March 1986: the SGPC's list shows him taking over from Gurcharan Singh Tohra, whose presidency since 6 January 1973 ended that day. No source opened says why Tohra's term ended or why the post passed to Kabal Singh.
  • Later in 1986: Khushwant Singh writes that Barnala suffered "yet another setback" in the SGPC elections, where Kabul Singh was defeated by Tohra, who was re-elected president.
  • November 1986: the SGPC's list ends his term and begins Tohra's next one on 30 November, while The Tribune's report on Tohra's death says Tohra returned as president on 11 November 1986. The two dates are 19 days apart.

The sources opened say nothing about where he came from or what he did before or after the eight months in office, so nothing more is stated here. On the record available he is the SGPC president whom Barnala's government backed in 1986 and whom Tohra replaced.
