Jathedar Didar Singh

ਜਥੇਦਾਰ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ

Jathedar of the Akal Takht in 1925 (a short period)

Jathedar of the Akal Takht for a short time in 1925, who ordered Akali prisoners in Nabha jail to come out when the Akali agitation was withdrawn.

Didar Singh was Jathedar of the Akal Takht for a short time in 1925, in the last stage of the Akali agitation for gurdwara reform. Wikipedia's table of Jathedars lists him as holding the office in 1925 for a short period, appointed by the SGPC, and gives no end date.

The one episode recorded of him comes from Jagpal Singh Tiwana's history of the Jathedar's office, published on SikhNet in 2009, which cites the book on the Akal Takht and its Jathedars by Jathedar Kirpal Singh. Tiwana writes that in 1925 the Akali leaders came to an agreement with the government and the agitation was withdrawn, and Sikhs began to come out of the jails, but some prisoners in Nabha jail refused to leave. Jathedar Didar Singh went to Nabha and told them that, since they had gone to jail at the orders of the Akal Takht, he now, as Jathedar, ordered them to leave. Tiwana says the order had the desired effect and the prisoners agreed to obey, and offers it as an example of the position the Jathedar held in the Sikh world.

The sources opened for this page say nothing about when Didar Singh was born, how he came to the office or when he left it, so none of that is stated here.
