Baltej Singh Dhillon

Senator for British Columbia (since 2025); retired RCMP officer, the first to wear a turban on duty · 13 November 1966

Retired RCMP officer who in 1991 became the first Mountie to wear a turban on duty after the 1990 dress code change. Appointed senator for British Columbia in February 2025.

Baltej Singh Dhillon is the retired RCMP officer who in 1991 became the first Mountie to wear a turban on duty, and a senator for British Columbia since 2025. His fight to join the force is a landmark for the right of Sikhs in Canada to serve in uniform in a turban. He is living, so every claim below comes from public reporting.

Who he is. Wikipedia records that he was born in Malaysia on 13 November 1966, came to Canada with his family in 1983 and studied criminology at Kwantlen College before applying to the RCMP.

Key moments

What he is remembered for. The Canadian Encyclopaedia presents his case as a test of religion against a dress code, settled in favour of accommodation by the government and then by the courts. The Prime Minister's office, announcing his Senate seat, named the 1991 turban as the moment he made history.
