From state prisoners in 1849 to police, gurdwaras and parliament: the main dates of the Sikh story in Malaya and Singapore, with the sources' differing figures side by side.

Who: Sikh prisoners, police, soldiers, merchants and professionals in Malaya and Singapore, and the gurdwara bodies and associations they built.

What: The main dates, with the sources' differing figures where they differ.

  • 1849 or 1850: Bhai Maharaj Singh and Khurruck Singh reach Singapore as state prisoners and are held at Outram Road. Wikipedia's article on Malaysia says they were deported in 1849; its article on Singapore gives 14 June or 9 July 1850.
  • 1873: Captain Tristram Speedy recruits Sikhs, and Sikh soldiers are brought in to guard the Perak tin mines, according to Wikipedia.
  • 26 March 1881: the first 54 recruits of the Sikh Police Contingent reach Singapore and 65 more follow in August, Wikipedia says; the historian Tan Tai Yong says 165 Sikhs arrived in 1881. The earliest known gurdwara is set up by the contingent at Pearl's Hill.
  • 19 May 1895: the Penang Singh Sabha is founded, and by the 1890s there are Singh Sabhas in Singapore and Taiping too (Wikipedia).
  • 27 December 1903: the Khalsa Diwan Malaya is formed at Taiping after a Guru Gobind Singh birthday gathering of about 800 people, with Subedar Major Gurdit Singh of Taiping as its first president (Asia Samachar).
  • 1912: a committee led by a Sindhi merchant buys a bungalow on Queen Street, which becomes the Central Sikh Temple (Tan Tai Yong; Wikipedia).
  • 1915: the Sikh Advisory Board is formed (Wikipedia). On 15 February the 5th Light Infantry mutinies in Singapore, and 60 soldiers of the 36th Sikhs help put it down.
  • 1924: the Silat Road gurdwara is completed at a cost of 54,000 Singapore dollars (Wikipedia).
  • 1931: the census records 2,988 Sikhs in Singapore (Tan Tai Yong).
  • 1942 to 1945: during the Japanese occupation the Silat Road gurdwara shelters war widows and orphans, and the Sikh Police Contingent is abolished in 1945 (Wikipedia).
  • After 1947: families displaced by Partition come to Singapore and Malaya, but Malayan immigration laws of 1953 and 1959 sharply cut arrivals (Tan Tai Yong).
  • 1978 to 2014: Karpal Singh sits in Malaysia's parliament, for Jelutong from 1978 to 1999 and for Bukit Gelugor from 2004 until his death on 17 April 2014 (Asia Samachar; Wikipedia).
  • 1986: urban redevelopment forces the Central Sikh Temple to move to Towner Road (Wikipedia).
  • 2020: Singapore's census counts 12,051 Sikhs, 0.35 percent of residents, against 12,952 in 2010; Wikipedia estimates Malaysia's Sikhs at 100,000 to 130,000.

Where: Singapore, at Outram Road, Pearl's Hill, Queen Street, Silat Road and Towner Road, and in Malaya at Perak, Penang and Taiping.

Why it mattered: Sikhs came to Malaya and Singapore first as prisoners, then as the police and soldiers the colonial government recruited. Their first gurdwaras began inside police lines and barracks, and became the community's centres as merchants, watchmen and professionals followed.
