Organisation
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)
Student wing of the RSS family, registered on 9 July 1949 after a first convention at Ambala. In 2019 its Panjab University unit accused a student leader of backing a Punjab referendum.
What it is: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is an all-India student organisation. Its own site says its main aim is work in education with a wider view of national reconstruction, that it started its activities in 1948 with a first convention at Ambala, and that it was registered on 9 July 1949. Wikipedia says it began on the initiative of the RSS activist Balraj Madhok to counter communist influence on campuses, describes it as the RSS's student wing, which the ABVP itself accepts, and notes that it denies any affiliation with the BJP.
Its leaders: Its site names Prof. Om Prakash Bahal as first national president and Keshav Deo Verma as first national general secretary, and lists Yashwantrao Kelkar, a Bombay lecturer who became its main organiser in 1958, among its founders. Wikipedia reports that Raghuraj Kishore Tiwari is national president and Virendra Singh Solanki national general secretary, both chosen in November 2025, and that BJP leaders Amit Shah and Arun Jaitley came up through the ABVP.
Its size: Wikipedia says the ABVP reports about 7.7 million members for 2025 to 2026, against 3.175 million in 2016 and 160,000 in 1974.
Its part in this history: Its Punjab connection begins with that first convention at Ambala, then in East Punjab. At Panjab University in Chandigarh, The Tribune reported on 18 August 2019 that the ABVP asked the left-leaning Students for Society to explain its position after a former president of the Campus Students Council, Kanupriya, skipped Independence Day celebrations. The ABVP accused her of supporting a Punjab referendum, which she denied, and the students' group accused the RSS and the ABVP of pushing a Hindu Rashtra.
