Four men charged with murder in Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing
In May 2024 police charged four Indian nationals with first-degree murder over Nijjar's killing. The case is still pretrial, and who ordered the killing is still disputed.
Who: Four Indian nationals, Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh, Karanpreet Singh and Amandeep Singh, charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder; they are presumed innocent. Police were represented by Superintendent Mandeep Mooker of B.C.'s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. The victim was Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
What: On Friday 3 May 2024 police announced the arrest in Edmonton of Kamalpreet Singh, Karanpreet Singh and Karan Brar. Al Jazeera reported that all three were non-permanent residents who had lived in Canada for three to five years. Mooker said "This investigation does not end here", that police wanted to arrest others who may have played a role, and that they were looking at possible ties to the Indian government but had nothing to share. CBC, citing unnamed sources, reported that the alleged hit squad served as shooters, drivers and spotters.
On Saturday 11 May police announced a fourth man, Amandeep Singh, 22, charged with the same offences. He was already in Peel Regional Police custody on unrelated firearms charges and had lived in Brampton, Surrey and Abbotsford. All four were due in a Surrey court on 21 May.
In January 2025 reports said all four had been granted bail. The B.C. Prosecution Service said that was not true: all four were detained and remained in custody, and no trial dates had been set. The latest custody statement found is from that month. By February 2026 the case was pretrial under a publication ban, and on 24 December 2025 Canada's Attorney General had asked the Federal Court to withhold information that would be injurious to international relations and national security. Global News reported that the RCMP believes India used the gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to arrange the killing, and that India denies involvement. On 7 July 2026 the FBI and RCMP announced a US indictment alleging that Bishnoi and Satinderjeet Singh, known as Goldy Brar, ordered the killing no later than 18 June 2023. Indictments are allegations.
Where: The arrests were in Edmonton and the first court appearances in Surrey, British Columbia, where Nijjar was shot at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara.
Why it mattered: These were the first arrests in a case nearly a year old, and they named the men said to have carried out the killing while leaving open who ordered it. That question drove the October 2024 break between Canada and India, and the sensitive-evidence application means much of what police hold may never be heard in open court.
