Bhindranwale's Panthic profile grows

1977-78 · Punjabi Suba

Building base for subsequent crisis

Who: Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale as newly-installed Damdami Taksal Jathedar.

What: Through 1977-1978, Bhindranwale's profile within the Panth grew substantially:

Where: Punjab, with particular strength in Malwa region.

Why it mattered: Bhindranwale's 1977-78 momentum built the base that would sustain him through the subsequent political crisis. By late 1977, he was already controversial, mainstream Akalis viewed him warily; traditionalists respected his scholarship; Nirankaris viewed him as a direct threat.

The Sant Nirankari Mission context: The Sant Nirankari Mission claimed a living Guru in the person of Baba Gurbachan Singh, directly contradicting Sikh Shabad Guru doctrine (that the eternal Guru is Sri Guru Granth Sahib, with no human succession possible). Bhindranwale's preaching against this claim was theologically orthodox but politically confrontational.
