Gurnam Singh becomes CM
ਗੁਰਨਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਬਣੇ
First Akali-led government of the new state
Who: Gurnam Singh (CM) (1899-1973), former Justice of Punjab High Court, sworn in as the reorganised state's first non-Congress CM. Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir of the Congress had held the post since November 1, 1966.
What: Gurnam Singh led an Akali-led coalition (SAD Sant Group + Jan Sangh + Communists + Republicans) taking office March 8, 1967. First Akali-led Punjab government in history.
Where: Chandigarh.
Why it mattered: Institutional arrival of Akali politics in executive office post-Punjabi Suba. Demonstrated viability of Akali-led governance. Set precedent for subsequent Akali governments.
Short tenure: Lachhman Singh Gill's defection brought the coalition down in November 1967; Gill governed with Congress support until President's Rule in August 1968. Gurnam Singh returned as CM February 1969 - March 1970 before another collapse, then Parkash Singh Badal began his first CM term.
Legacy: The coalition-instability pattern of 1967-1970 demonstrated the structural difficulty of Akali governance within the Indian federal framework, multi-party coalitions fragmented under combined internal Akali faction pressures + external Congress pressures + structural central-state tensions.
