Parkash Singh Badal first CM

Mar 1970 · Punjabi Suba

Beginning of Badal era

Who: Parkash Singh Badal (born December 8, 1927), rising Akali Dal figure from Lambi village, Muktsar district.

What: Badal assumed office as Punjab CM for the first time in March 1970, replacing the Gurnam Singh government after its second collapse.

Where: Chandigarh.

Why it mattered: Beginning of the Badal era in Punjab politics. Parkash Singh Badal would eventually serve as Punjab CM five times (1970-71; 1977-80; 1997-2002; 2007-12; 2012-17), totaling over 18 years of Punjab chief-ministership across 47 years of political prominence.

1970-71 first tenure: Badal's initial CM term lasted only about a year before another coalition collapse. Established Badal as a significant Akali figure but had limited substantive legacy.

Long-term legacy: The Badal family's political dominance of Punjab Akali politics through to 2024-25 traces to these initial 1970s foundations. The family's subsequent hold on SGPC (through alliance with specific SGPC presidents), on SAD party apparatus, and on Punjab state government would be progressively challenged by internal reform movements, eventually producing the 2024 Sukhbir Badal Tankhaiya Declaration and the broader SAD Sudhar Lehar.
