Punjabi Suba Morchas
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੇ ਮੋਰਚੇ
12,000 jailed in 1955; 30,000 to 57,129 in 1960-61
Who: Master Tara Singh, Sant Fateh Singh (then subordinate to Tara Singh), Gurcharan Singh Tohra (rising Akali figure), thousands of Akali Sikh volunteers.
What: Sustained mass Akali mobilization for Punjabi Suba through the late 1950s:
- Multiple Morchas (mass-arrest campaigns), wave-arrest tactics similar to the 1922 Guru Ka Bagh precedent.
- Master Tara Singh repeatedly imprisoned (he was jailed 14 times total between 1930-1966).
- Gurcharan Singh Tohra jailed 1955 and 1960 specifically for Punjabi Suba agitations.
- The 1955 slogan morcha saw about 12,000 arrests, and police entered the Darbar Sahib complex on the night of July 3-4, 1955.
- After a lull under the Regional Formula the Akalis accepted on March 11, 1956, the 1960-61 morcha jailed 30,000 by official count, 57,129 by the Akali count.
Where: Punjab, with arrests across Sikh-populated districts.
Why it mattered: The Morchas demonstrated Akali Dal's capacity for sustained mass political mobilization over years. The Indian state's response, arrests and negotiations without substantive concession, produced progressive Akali radicalization that would eventually be channeled through Sant Fateh Singh's 1965-66 fasts.
