Sardar Sundar Singh Ramgarhia
ਸਰਦਾਰ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਰਾਮਗੜ੍ਹੀਆ
Secretary at the first meeting of the SGPC on 12 December 1920 by one Encyclopaedia entry, and its third president, from 19 February to 16 July 1922 by the SGPC's own list.
Sardar Sundar Singh Ramgarhia appears in the earliest records of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the body the Sikhs formed in November 1920 to take their historic gurdwaras out of the hands of hereditary managers. The SGPC's own list of its presidents gives him as its third president, from 19 February 1922 to 16 July 1922. He came after Baba Kharak Singh and before Mehtab Singh.
The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism, in its entry on the SGPC, says the committee held its inaugural meeting at the Akal Takht on 12 December 1920 and names Sundar Singh Ramgarhia as secretary, with Sundar Singh Majithia as president and Harbans Singh of Atari as vice-president. Its entry on the Akali movement names Bhai Jodh Singh as the secretary elected at that first session, so the two entries do not agree on who held the post.
Key moments
- 12 December 1920: the SGPC met for the first time at the Akal Takht, and on the Encyclopaedia's entry on the SGPC he was its secretary.
- 19 February 1922: he became president, according to the SGPC's list. The Encyclopaedia says Baba Kharak Singh was released on 17 January 1922 when the keys of the Golden Temple treasury were handed back, was soon arrested again, and was sentenced on 4 April 1922. It does not give the date of the second arrest.
- 16 July 1922: the list shows Mehtab Singh taking over as president.
The sources opened for this page say no more about him: not his birth or death, his village, or what the SGPC did while he held the chair. None of that is stated here. He is not Sardar Sundar Singh Majithia, the first president, nor Master Sundar Singh Lyallpuri.
