Easy reading is for English for now.
Giani Harcharan Singh Hudiara was an Akali leader who stood with Sant Fateh Singh, a vice-president of the SGPC in 1955 and of the Shiromani Akali Dal in 1961, and in May 1967 the man who announced a separate Akali Dal while Gurnam Singh's ministry was in office.
Key moments
- 1955: the SGPC's history of the Punjabi Suba morcha says that Master Tara Singh was SGPC president, Giani Kartar Singh senior vice-president and Giani Harcharan Singh Hudiara junior vice-president. He was arrested on 11 May 1955, soon after Master Tara Singh courted arrest at the start of the morcha. The book says that his resignation, already offered, could not be accepted because of his sudden arrest, so no one was chosen in his place.
- 23 May 1960: Gurmit Singh's History of Sikh Struggles says that about 500 Akalis were arrested that night, but that top leaders including Sant Fateh Singh, Hudiara and Jiwan Singh Umranangal escaped and reached the Golden Temple at Amritsar.
- August 1961: the same book says that during Master Tara Singh's fast, which began on 15 August 1961, Hudiara, as vice-president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, declared that after the martyrdom of Master Tara Singh and Sant Fateh Singh the new leadership might call for a sovereign Punjab.
- 8 July 1962: Gurmit Singh says that when Master Tara Singh had the Akali Working Committee expel Lachhman Singh Gill and Jiwan Singh Umranangal, Sant Fateh Singh walked out together with Hudiara and called a convention at Mullanpur on 22 July 1962.
- 26 May 1967: the Encyclopaedia of Sikhism says Hudiara and Lachhman Singh Gill sided with the Congress in the vote on a no-confidence motion against Gurnam Singh's ministry. The ministry survived the motion, but Hudiara announced the formation of a separate Akali Dal on the same day.
