Survivor of the 1984 violence; hunger striker and petitioner against Sajjan Kumar's 2013 acquittal

Woman who lost close relatives in the 1984 violence against Sikhs; her May 2013 hunger strike and High Court appeal challenged Sajjan Kumar's acquittal.

Bibi Nirpreet Kaur is known in public life for one campaign in 2013: a hunger strike and a court appeal against the acquittal of the Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 case. Press reports describe her as a woman whose close relatives died in the 1984 violence against Sikhs. This profile covers only what she did in public.

Key moments

  • 30 April 2013: a Delhi sessions court acquitted Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 case.
  • 3 May 2013: she began an indefinite hunger strike. India TV reported that leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party, including Arvind Kejriwal, joined a day's fast at Jantar Mantar in support and planned to back her longer strike.
  • About 8 May 2013: after six days at Jantar Mantar she ended the fast. The Tribune reported that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal told her President Pranab Mukherjee had assured a delegation he would look into the demands of the 1984 victims. The delegation had asked for a Supreme Court-monitored special investigation team, a CBI challenge to the acquittal in the High Court, a charge sheet in another case registered at the Nangloi police station, and a faster investigation of Congress leader Jagdish Tytler.
  • 10 July 2013: with Jagdish Kaur she challenged the acquittal in the Delhi High Court, saying the trial court had overlooked admissible evidence, including Sajjan Kumar's speech of 2 November 1984. A bench of Justices G S Sistani and G P Mittal issued notice to the CBI and Sajjan Kumar, returnable on 27 August.

Her fast and appeal kept two demands in public view: a time-bound special investigation team and a CBI challenge to the acquittal. Sajjan Kumar's later conviction is covered in its own entry.
