Khalra Mission Organisation

ਖਾਲੜਾ ਮਿਸ਼ਨ ਆਰਗੇਨਾਈਜ਼ੇਸ਼ਨ

Organisation formed in 1995 by Bibi Paramjit Kaur Khalra and friends of Jaswant Singh Khalra to keep Punjab's disappeared in view; it organised the June 2025 Amritsar launch of Darkness Defied.

The Khalra Mission Organisation (KMO) carries on the work of Jaswant Singh Khalra, the Akali Dal human rights worker who documented the police cremations of Punjab's disappeared and was abducted in September 1995. The Wire reports that Bibi Paramjit Kaur Khalra, his widow, formed it in 1995 with his friends, and says it reignited the struggle to keep Punjab's disappeared visible. In March 2024 The Tribune named Harmandeep Singh Sarhali as its president and Bibi Paramjit Kaur as its chairperson, and in that report it gave the name as Khalra Mission Committee.

Key moments

  • 1995: formed, according to The Wire, by Bibi Paramjit Kaur Khalra with friends of Jaswant Singh Khalra.
  • March 2024: its president, Harmandeep Singh Sarhali, announced that Bibi Paramjit Kaur would not contest that year's Lok Sabha election. He said that to contest elections was "beyond our approach" and that the decision was unanimous, The Tribune reports.
  • 12 June 2025: it organised the launch of the English edition of Bhai Ajmer Singh's Darkness Defied: The Life and Legacy of Jaswant Singh Khalra at Bhai Gurdas Hall, Heritage Street, Amritsar. Khalra's sisters Balbir Kaur and Beant Kaur, his niece Rajwant Kaur and Lakhwinder Kaur, wife of the late Kirpal Singh Randhawa, released the book. The human rights activist Rajiv Singh Randhawa organised the function and spoke, and Balwinder Singh Jhabal of the Khalra Mission was among those present, The Tribune reports.

Where it stands: It was active in 2024 and 2025, as the reports above show. The sources found do not describe its other work, membership or funding.
