Record anti-Sikh hate crime figures reported for the United States in 2025

Apr 9, 2026 · Morcha & the Long Reach

A preliminary count in April 2026 put anti-Sikh hate crimes at 228 for 2025. The FBI's August data was lower but still above 2024. A House bill would create a DOJ task force on anti-Sikh hate.

Who: Sikh Americans, the FBI, the Sikh Coalition, Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC), and US Representatives Josh Gottheimer and David Valadao, who introduced a federal bill on anti-Sikh hate.

What: On April 9, 2026, Axios reported a preliminary analysis of FBI data that put anti-Sikh hate crimes at 228 in 2025, against 6 in 2015, a rise of about 3,700 per cent, while total US hate crimes fell 11 per cent. AAJC's preliminary release of April 23 counted 226 anti-Sikh single-bias incidents, up 59 per cent from 142 in 2024. The 2015 comparison is weak, because the base is tiny and anti-Sikh bias has only recently been tracked as its own category. The FBI released its 2025 data on August 14, 2026. The Sikh Coalition, citing AAJC's analysis, reported 177 anti-Sikh incidents, up 25 per cent from 142, with a peak of 26 in September 2025. IANS reported about 189 anti-Sikh offences and 193 victims, third behind anti-Jewish and anti-Islamic bias. The FBI's 2024 report, released on August 5, 2025, had recorded 153 anti-Sikh victimisations, also third. The Sikh Coalition calls the FBI data an undercount, because many agencies report no hate crimes or send no data, and backs the Improving Reporting to Prevent Hate Act. On January 20, 2026 Gottheimer and Valadao introduced H.R. 7100, the Sikh American Anti-Discrimination Act, which would create a Justice Department task force on anti-Sikh discrimination, set a federal definition of anti-Sikh hate, run education programmes and report to Congress each year.

Where: Across the United States.

Why it mattered: However it is counted, the figures put Sikhs among the most targeted religious groups in the country and show a rise in 2025 over 2024. The numbers shifted between the April and August releases, which is why the headline figure of 228 should be read as preliminary.
