Sant Longowal assassinated
ਸੰਤ ਲੌਂਗੋਵਾਲ ਦਾ ਕਤਲ
Ended political-settlement track
Who: Victim: Sant Harchand Singh Longowal, Akali Dal President, Rajiv-Longowal Accord signatory. Assassins: Gian Singh Leel and Jarnail Singh Halwara, both Kharkus.
What: Longowal was shot and killed while addressing a religious gathering at Gurdwara Sher-e-Punjab in Sherpur Kalan village (Sangrur district) on August 20, 1985. Just 27 days after signing the Rajiv-Longowal Accord on July 24, 1985.
The assassins' motive: Kharkus viewed Longowal as having betrayed the Panthic political movement by accepting the Accord's partial settlement. They rejected the Accord as insufficient fulfillment of Anandpur Sahib Resolution demands.
Where: Gurdwara Sher-e-Punjab, Sherpur Kalan village, Sangrur district, Punjab.
Why it mattered: Ended the political-settlement track opened by the Rajiv-Longowal Accord. Consequences:
- No senior Akali figure was subsequently willing to negotiate equivalent political settlements, fear of Longowal's fate.
- Accord's implementation died with its Akali signatory.
- Panthic internal polarization hardened: Kharku vs moderate-Akali tensions deepened.
- Indian state's negotiating partner no longer available in the same form.
Longowal's Panthic status: In Panthic memory, Longowal's status is contested. Majority Panthic framing: sincere negotiator who accepted partial settlement for pragmatic reasons; killed by Kharku Singhs who rejected the Accord as a betrayal of the Anandpur Sahib Resolution. Minority Panthic framing: insufficiently fought for Anandpur Sahib Resolution; accepted inadequate terms; his assassination was extreme but his political judgment was flawed.
