SGPC elections

Jan 1965 · Partition Aftermath

Fateh Singh's 90-45 victory conclusive

Who: Sant Fateh Singh faction vs Master Tara Singh faction.

What: Elections for the SGPC, the "Sikh Parliament", held January 17, 1965. Fateh Singh's Akali Dal faction won 90 of 135 seats. Tara Singh's faction won only 45.

Where: Elections held across Punjab.

Why it mattered: Conclusive demonstration that Fateh Singh had eclipsed Tara Singh as principal Panthic voice. The 2-to-1 SGPC victory established Fateh Singh's institutional-religious legitimacy to match his earlier political mobilization capacity. From this point forward, Master Tara Singh was effectively a secondary figure in Akali politics, though he remained active and influential until his death in November 1967.

Institutional implications: The 1965 SGPC elections also demonstrated the democratic robustness of the 1925 Sikh Gurdwaras Act framework, a genuine electoral contest producing a clear outcome and peaceful leadership transition. This institutional characteristic of SGPC elections would be tested repeatedly over subsequent decades (in varied ways) but the 1925 framework fundamentally held.
