Sikh Rehat Maryada standardized
Authoritative Sikh conduct code
Who: SGPC under multi-year consultation with the Panth, adopting prior Singh Sabha scholarship and institutional consensus.
What: Formal adoption of the Sikh Rehat Maryada, the authoritative standardized code of Sikh religious conduct, covering:
- The Five Ks as mandatory Amritdhari requirements.
- Daily Nitnem (prayer) structure.
- Amrit Sanchar (Khalsa initiation) ceremonial form.
- Gurdwara Maryada (protocols for scripture handling, Langar, Kirtan).
- Life-cycle ceremonies (birth, Anand Karaj marriage, funeral).
- Tankhaiya (religious censure) framework.
Where: Amritsar.
Why it mattered: Standardized Sikh religious practice across the globally-dispersing Panth. Replaced earlier fragmentary practice traditions with a single institutional code. Every subsequent Sikh religious-institutional question, Ragmala recitation, Dasam Granth position, Amrit Sanchar conduct, is ultimately addressed by reference to the Rehat Maryada framework.
Limitations: The 1945 Rehat Maryada was a compromise document navigating various traditional Panthic currents (Nihang, Damdami Taksal, Akhand Kirtani Jatha, others). It has been variously critiqued, from traditional quarters for being too modernist, from reform quarters (Professor Sahib Singh, Dr. Karminder Singh Dhillon) for being insufficiently grammatically rigorous. Its durability nonetheless demonstrates its functional centrality.
