Shahdara

Place

East Delhi area where Sikhs were killed from 1 to 3 November 1984. Survivors' affidavits describe mobs and police inaction in many neighbourhoods; later cases and a Supreme Court SIT also name it.

Shahdara is an area of East Delhi, across the Yamuna. In the first days of November 1984, after Indira Gandhi's assassination, Sikhs in its colonies were hunted down in the Delhi pogrom, the Tesra Ghallughara. The 1984 Sikh Archive publishes survivors' affidavits for Delhi area by area, and its Shahdara page covers more than a dozen neighbourhoods. It gives no overall toll for Shahdara and none of the sources opened here does. The affidavits are survivors' allegations; most blame neighbours or "mobs", and the archive does not say which have been tested in court.

What survivors say (from affidavits, as the archive reports them)

Official records

What it means today. Survivors say police here stood by or sent Sikhs home. A Shahdara police station case reached the charge stage only in 2019.
