Rana Ayyub
ਰਾਣਾ ਅਯੂਬ
Indian investigative journalist and Washington Post columnist, author of Gujarat Files. In November 2025 she and her father received threats demanding an article on 1984 and Indira Gandhi's killing.
Rana Ayyub is an Indian journalist, born in Mumbai in 1984, who writes as a global opinions columnist for The Washington Post. She appears in this record because she has reported on Gujarat in 2002 and has written about November 1984 on social media, and because of the threats she received in November 2025. She is a living person. What follows is what she, rights bodies, the courts and the government have said, as reported, and each claim is marked.
Key moments
- 2010 to 2016: The Canadian Journalists for Free Expression says she went undercover in 2010 to investigate official involvement in communal violence. Her book Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover Up (2016) is based on recordings made while posing as a filmmaker named Maithili Tyagi, of Gujarat bureaucrats and police officers (Wikipedia).
- 2019: becomes a Contributing Global Opinions Writer at The Washington Post (Wikipedia).
- February 2022: the Enforcement Directorate freezes her bank account over allegations of laundering money raised for Covid relief. She denies the allegations and calls the case an attempt to intimidate her. On 21 February two UN Special Rapporteurs, Irene Khan and Mary Lawlor, said she faced judicial harassment and online threats; India's mission in Geneva called the claim baseless and unwarranted.
- 29 March 2022: immigration officers at Mumbai airport stop her boarding a flight to London, where she was to speak at an event on online violence against women journalists, citing the Enforcement Directorate inquiry (Committee to Protect Journalists).
- 2022 and 2024: the National Press Club names her its John Aubuchon honoree in 2022, the first Indian journalist to receive it. In 2024 she receives the International Press Freedom Award of the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression.
- 2 November 2025: over about 20 minutes she receives calls, video calls and messages from a caller who demanded a column on the 1984 anti-Sikh violence and the killing of Indira Gandhi, gave her home address and threatened to harm her and her father if she refused (Committee to Protect Journalists, PEN International). PEN International says the threats began soon after she shared an Instagram post on the legacy of the 1984 pogrom. Her complaint says the caller's profile photograph matched a photograph of the jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi; the Committee to Protect Journalists could not verify that. She complained to police on 3 November; the Navi Mumbai Police registered a non-cognizable report and posted officers at her home. PEN International and other groups later wrote to the Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner asking for a formal investigation.
Where the record stands. None of the reports opened here identifies the caller. Rights groups and the UN experts present the pressure on her as harassment for her reporting. India's mission in Geneva said the claims were baseless and that no one is above the law, and the Enforcement Directorate's money-laundering case is one she disputes.
