Gurkirat Singh Kotli

ਗੁਰਕੀਰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੋਟਲੀ

Congress member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly for Khanna; grandson of Chief Minister Beant Singh

Congress MLA from Khanna and a grandson of Chief Minister Beant Singh; in March 2012 he welcomed the stay of Balwant Singh Rajoana's hanging, saying the hard-earned peace could not be jeopardised.

Gurkirat Singh Kotli is a Congress politician from Punjab and a grandson of the late Chief Minister Beant Singh. He was the member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly for Khanna, and The Tribune reported his reaction in March 2012 to the stay of the execution of Balwant Singh Rajoana.

The Tribune reported on 29 March 2012 that on 28 March the Union Home Ministry stayed Rajoana's execution, which had been fixed for 31 March at Patiala jail, after the SGPC filed a mercy petition under Article 72 of the Constitution. The stay was to remain until the Supreme Court ruled on the related appeals or the President decided the mercy petition, whichever came later. The paper links the case to the assassination of Beant Singh.

In a sidebar headed "Decision in interest of peace", The Tribune identifies Kotli as the Khanna MLA and Beant Singh's grandson. It quotes him saying that the hard-earned peace achieved after several sacrifices, including that by "martyr Beant Singh", cannot be jeopardised, and that any step in the interest of peace and harmony would always be supported by his side.

Wikipedia says he was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly from Khanna in 2012 and again in 2017, and that he joined the state cabinet in September 2021. The sources we opened say nothing more about his views on Rajoana's case.
