Giani Mohan Singh of Bhindran Kalan

ਭਿੰਡਰਾਂ ਕਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਮੋਹਨ ਸਿੰਘ

Head of the Bhindran Kalan branch of the Taksal tradition after 1969

Head of the Bhindran Kalan branch that carried on Sant Gurbachan Singh Khalsa's work in parallel with Sant Kartar Singh Khalsa's Mehta group after 1969; recognised by the SGPC, per The Tribune.

Giani Mohan Singh, called Sant Mohan Singh in the sources, headed the Bhindran Kalan branch of the tradition of Sant Gurbachan Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale after Sant Gurbachan Singh's death in 1969. The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism says that Sant Gurbachan Singh Khalsa, whose headquarters were at the village of Bhindar Kalan in Faridkot district, travelled widely with a caravan of pupils, preaching and expounding the scripture, and that after his death Sant Kartar Singh Khalsa and a parallel group led by Sant Mohan Singh carried on his work. Its chart of the lineage shows two lines from Sant Gurbachan Singh Khalsa: Sant Mohan Singh at Bhindar Kalan, and Sant Kartar Singh Khalsa, who died in 1977, at Mehta, from whom the line passes to Sant Jarnail Singh.

What The Tribune reported

  • 28 December 2004: Varinder Walia reported that Sant Kartar Singh moved the headquarters from Bhindran to Chowk Mehta in 1969, and that although Sant Mohan Singh was given the dastar by the family of Sant Gurbachan Singh, Chowk Mehta became the mainstream Taksal.
  • 2 January 2005: the same reporter wrote that after Sant Gurbachan Singh's death the SGPC recognised Sant Mohan Singh at Bhinderan while Sant Kartar Singh became the mainstream head, and called the 2004 split in the Taksal the first in 35 years.

Wikipedia's article on the Damdami Taksal gives his years as 1919 to 2020, citing a 2012 collection of essays; no other source opened for this page confirms them. The sources opened say nothing more of his life, his teachers or his work, so nothing more is stated here.
