Indira Gandhi assassinated
ਇੰਦਰਾ ਗਾਂਧੀ ਦਾ ਕਤਲ
Beant Singh and Satwant Singh (bodyguards)
Who: Assassins: Beant Singh (bodyguard) and Satwant Singh, Sikh members of Indira Gandhi's personal security detail. Victim: Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India.
What: Indira Gandhi was shot dead at approximately 9:20 AM on October 31, 1984 while walking from her residence (1 Safdarjung Road) to her office (1 Akbar Road) in New Delhi. The assassins fired multiple rounds at close range. Beant Singh was killed by other security personnel immediately. Satwant Singh was wounded and subsequently captured, tried, and hanged (January 6, 1989, along with Kehar Singh, who was framed as a co-conspirator).
Location and specifics:
- Beant Singh fired first (3 rounds from service revolver).
- Satwant Singh fired a burst from Sten gun.
- Indira Gandhi hit by approximately 30 rounds.
- Pronounced dead at AIIMS approximately 2:20 PM.
Where: 1 Safdarjung Road / 1 Akbar Road walkway, New Delhi.
Why it mattered: The direct triggering event for the November 1984 Delhi Pogrom. Per the assassins' stated motivation (as preserved in confessions and trial records):
- Beant Singh and Satwant Singh acted as vengeance for Operation Blue Star: Indira Gandhi's order of the assault on Sri Harmandir Sahib.
- Both were Sikh and had served as Indira Gandhi's bodyguards.
- Beant Singh had served Indira Gandhi for nine years prior to the assassination.
Panthic memory framing: In Panthic historical memory, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh are treated as:
- Sikh soldiers who defended Sikh sacred space retrospectively, avenging Blue Star.
- Shaheeds (martyrs): Beant Singh fell on the spot and Satwant Singh went to the gallows, and both deaths are honoured as Shaheedi.
- Sons of the Panth, with annual commemorations in Sikh Gurdwaras.
Beant Singh (bodyguard)'s legacy: Beant Singh's son Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa was elected Member of Parliament from Faridkot in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a symbolic continuation of the Panthic political statement.
Critical distinction: The Beant Singh (bodyguard) (Indira's assassin, 1984) is distinct from Beant Singh (Punjab CM 1992-95, assassinated August 31, 1995 by Dilawar Singh human bomb). The shared first name produces occasional confusion.
Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh trial: Held at Tihar Jail. Kehar Singh's conviction was later widely viewed as framed, insufficient evidence of involvement in the conspiracy. Both hanged January 6, 1989.
