Parkash Singh Badal second CM term
ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਦਲ ਦੂਜੀ ਵਾਰ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਬਣੇ
Parkash Singh Badal became Chief Minister for the second time (his first term was 1970 to 1971), heading an Akali-Janata coalition sworn in on 20 June 1977; it fell in 1980.
Who: Parkash Singh Badal, former Union Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation, heading a coalition of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Janata Party. Gurcharan Singh Tohra, the SGPC president, and Jagdev Singh Talwandi, the Akali Dal president, stood with him at the swearing-in. The Governor, M. M. Chaudhury, administered the oath.
What: This was Badal's second term as Chief Minister, not his first: he had led an Akali Dal (Sant Fateh Singh) and Jan Sangh coalition from March 1970, which lasted a little over a year, until June 1971, as ThePrint records. On 20 June 1977 he took the oath in Punjabi on the Raj Bhavan lawns at Chandigarh, after the Acting President's order revoking President's rule had been read out. On 23 June fifteen ministers were sworn in, making a 16-member Akali-Janata coalition. The Tribune counts nine Akali Cabinet ministers (the Chief Minister among them) and two Akali Ministers of State, with four Janata Cabinet ministers and one Janata Minister of State.
Where: Chandigarh, at the Punjab Raj Bhavan.
Why it mattered: It put the Akali Dal back in office in alliance with the Janata Party. It lasted from 1977 to 1980, and ThePrint says it "could not last a full five-year term". After Indira Gandhi's return to power in 1980 the Punjab assembly was dissolved, along with those of twelve other states. In the elections that followed the Congress came to power in Punjab under Darbara Singh, and Badal became Leader of the Opposition. His third term began in 1997, an Akali-BJP government that ThePrint says completed a full term.
