ਰਿਚਰਡਸਨ, ਟੈਕਸਸ

Dallas suburb with Gurdwara Singh Sabha Richardson, which SikhNet listed as the venue of the 2024 international finals of the Sikh Youth Symposium run by the Sikh Youth Alliance of North America.

Richardson is a city in Dallas and Collin counties and an inner suburb of Dallas, with 119,469 residents at the 2020 census (Wikipedia). Its Sikh institution is Gurdwara Singh Sabha Richardson.

The community. A CBS Texas report of August 2012 put about 40,000 Sikhs in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and counted five gurdwaras in North Texas; it mentions a Richardson congregation whose youth programme teaches the basics of Sikhism. In October 2017 the Brookhaven Courier described a college world-religions class visiting the Gurdwara Singh Sabha Temple in Richardson, where a Sikh leader, Apardeep Singh, taught the history of the Gurus and the three principles of Nam Japna, Kirt Karna and Vand Chakna, and the class ate langar.

The Sikh Youth Symposium. The symposium is an annual public-speaking and debate contest for Sikh youth aged 6 to 22 in the United States and Canada, organised by the Sikh Youth Alliance of North America (SYANA) at local, regional and international level (Wikipedia). Dallas hosted the international final in 2008, at the Akaljot Gurdwara and Sikh Temple of North Texas. SikhNet's notice said the 2024 international symposium was scheduled for 1 to 4 August at Gurdwara Singh Sabha Richardson, with regional winners qualifying.

Texas context. The Texas Historical Commission marks the Sikh Center of the Gulf Coast Area in Houston as the first gurdwara in Texas, opened in 1973.
