Nangloi

ਨੰਗਲੋਈ

West Delhi locality where survivors say armed mobs came by truck and train in November 1984 and Sikhs were killed; also a station where army officers are said to have died.

Nangloi is a locality in West Delhi, bordered by Paschim Vihar, the Outer Ring Road and Najafgarh, close to Punjabi Bagh. In the November 1984 killings of Sikhs in Delhi it appears in two separate accounts that should not be confused: the killings in the Nangloi neighbourhood, and the killings of passengers at Nangloi and Tughlakabad railway stations.

The neighbourhood. The 1984 Sikh Archive collects survivors' affidavits to the Misra Commission. They say that:

  • armed mobs arrived by train at J.J. Colony on 31 October, and on 1 November thousands more came from nearby villages in trucks and trolleys and, at noon, on a train from Rohtak and Haryana;
  • Partap Kaur saw 32 dead Sikhs when she returned to Nangloi, and Gurbachan Singh says about 100 Sikh bodies lay on the roads and alleys of nearby Punjabi Bagh;
  • police at Nangloi police station turned Sikh women away, and seven police officials in a jeep at Punjabi Bagh did not intervene;
  • the local gurdwara was burned with the Guru Granth Sahib by the evening of 1 November.

These are survivors' sworn accounts, not court findings.

The railway stations. On 17 December 2012 the All India Sikh Students Federation, Sikhs for Justice and the All India Defence Brotherhood (Punjab) told a press conference at Chandigarh that dozens of Sikh armed forces personnel were killed at Tughlakabad and Nangloi stations, and named seven officers. They cited FIR No. 355 of 1 November 1984, lodged with the Government Railway Police, Delhi. On 3 January 2013 Sikh Siyasat News, citing PTI, reported that the Army's Adjutant General's branch was looking into the claims, which the National Security Adviser's secretariat had raised with the Defence Ministry. No result is reported in the sources opened.

What it means today. Human Rights Watch gives the Delhi toll as no fewer than 2,733 and reports that only about 30 people had been convicted by 2014.
