Key moments

  • 2004: he took a year's sabbatical to research in India, met victims of the November 1984 killings and saw the political fallout after the Nanavati Commission report was released.
  • 2005 and 2009: his research produced the report 1984 Sikhs' Kristallnacht, first launched in the UK Parliament in 2005 and substantially expanded in 2009.
  • 2014: he worked with the Delhi photographer Gauri Gill on the London exhibition The 1984 Anti-Sikh Pogroms Remembered, held at the Wiener Library.
  • 2017: he published 1984: India's Guilty Secret, with Kashi House in the UK and Rupa Publications in India. The publishers describe it as based on victim testimonies and official accounts, and as arguing that politicians were responsible and that the police, judiciary and media helped cover it up. Punjabi and Hindi editions were published in India by Rethink Books.

The 1984 Sikh Archive, at 1984sikh-archive.org, describes itself as an evidence-based digital research portal dedicated to documenting the November 1984 Sikh genocide.
