Ontario Khalsa Darbar (OKD), known locally as the Dixie Gurdwara, is a gurdwara at 7080 Dixie Road, Mississauga, Ontario. Its own history begins in 1973, when the Sikh community acquired about 1.9 acres of land with a small farmhouse. The gurdwara was officially established in 1978, with the sangat meeting in the farmhouse.
Key moments
- 1982: a mobile structure was built, and on 10 April the foundation was laid for a building of about 25,000 square feet.
- 25 June 1989: the new gurdwara was inaugurated.
- 1993 and 1995: the community obtained 25 more acres and then 11.5 acres, the latter for $2.3 million, which brings the site to about 38 acres.
- 13 July 1997: groundwork began on an expansion of about 110,000 square feet. A 135-foot Nishan Sahib was installed in 1998.
- 2019 to 2024: a new kitchen and an East Hall extension (2019); Kiratpur Park, open to all communities for scattering ashes (2022); refurbished halls 5 to 8 (2023); and an elevator linking the basement to the top floor (2024).
How it is run and what it offers
The gurdwara’s committee page lists 11 members. They include Chairman Baljit Singh Pandori, President Harpal Singh and General Secretary Paramjit Singh Gill. Wikipedia says the committee is elected every three years in March, and that the present one serves from April 2025 to March 2028. OKD offers weekly classes in Sikh faith and culture through the Gurmat Academy, which has its own page.
This page does not use the scale figures sometimes given for OKD, such as weekly attendance or the size of its largest procession, because published sources give conflicting numbers or none.
