Khalsa Primary School (Southall)

ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਇਮਰੀ ਸਕੂਲ (ਸਾਊਥਾਲ)

State-funded Sikh primary school in Southall, west London, for ages 3 to 11. The Southall gurdwara set it up, and it opened in 2009.

What it is: Khalsa Primary School is a state-funded Sikh faith primary school in Southall, in the London Borough of Ealing. Ofsted lists it as a primary school of Sikh religious character for ages 3 to 11, with 413 pupils and room for 472, at Norwood Green Road. Allschools lists it as a voluntary aided school, and the school's own site says it has two classes in each year from nursery to Year 6.

How it began: Wikipedia's article on Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall says the gurdwara set the school up to advance the education of Sikh pupils and that it stands at Norwood Hall, Tentelow Lane, bought for 2.8 million pounds from Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College; the article gives no reference for that passage. The government's teaching-vacancies listing says the school opened in 2009 and moved into a purpose-built building in 2010, while the school's own site says it moved into its purpose-built building in 2009. The same Wikipedia article says the gurdwara itself, on Havelock Road, opened on 30 March 2003 and cost 17.5 million pounds, paid for by donations from the local Sikh community.

What it teaches: The government listing says pupils follow an enhanced National Curriculum plus Sikh and Punjabi Studies taught by specialist staff. The school's site says daily prayer and Sikh festivals are central, that its values include sewa, selfless service, and that its three golden rules rest on the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Pupils visit and take part in events at the gurdwara. Wikipedia says it also takes children of other faiths.
