Gurmat Academy (Ontario Khalsa Darbar)

ਗੁਰਮਤ ਅਕੈਡਮੀ (ਓਂਟਾਰੀਓ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਦਰਬਾਰ)

Weekly Sikh heritage classes at Ontario Khalsa Darbar in Mississauga: Gurmukhi, Gurbani, Sikh history, Gurmat Sangeet, turban tying and gatka, for $50 a month.

The Gurmat Academy is the education programme of Ontario Khalsa Darbar (OKD), the Dixie Gurdwara at 7080 Dixie Road, Mississauga. OKD’s website says the academy offers weekly classes and year-round camps that teach Sikh faith and culture, under the line “Give Your Children the Most Valuable Gift.”

What it teaches

  • Gurmukhi, Punjabi, Gurbani Santheya and Sikh history.
  • Gurmat Sangeet: rabab, dilruba, harmonium and tabla.
  • Turban tying, gatka and a “Mini Khalsa” class.

How it runs

Classes are two hours long. The page lists Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday sessions from 6 to 8 pm and Sunday from 4 to 6 pm, with different subjects on different days. The fee is $50 a month. The classes are for children of all school ages, and adults are invited too. The page carries an “Under Maintenance” notice, so the timetable may be out of date. It gives no founding date, no names of instructors and no enrolment figures.

Where it stands today

It is listed among OKD’s services and is open to enrol. This page rests on OKD’s own description, and no independent report on the academy has been found.
